1 - Internet and E-Mail Management

The 5800 XpressMusic allows managing multiple email accounts and Web browsing.
Setting up email accounts and data account is fairly simple to make.
Sending and Receiving E. Mail working properly.
Can activate the "Push Email" (selecting the access point as the default data account with your operator) works perfectly.
Reading a E. Mail in HTML format is also very well managed, simply click on a link available in the E. Mail and Mail content is loaded into the mobile web browser.

Attachments to E-Mail can not be read as the Nokia 5800 does not drive office documents.
The attachment is done using the stylus or on one of two virtual qwerty keyboard, or by character recognition or through an alphanumeric keyboard.
As all mobiles running Symbian, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic includes the web browser Opera Mini Map, which allows you to view web sites properly.

Viewing web pages, available in portrait or landscape mode is correct, but when used to view these web pages on a 3G iPhone or a Nokia e90, the screen of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic looks a little narrow.

The presence of a WiFi chip allows for faster loading web pages, while leaving its data plan.
Connecting to a WIFI Hot spot works perfectly, and the time for establishing a connection are quite correct.

2 - Playback of audio files, video and radio

Like all moving parts of range "XpressMusic, the Nokia 5800 is primarily dedicated to music.
Playback of audio files can be done either through a menu displaying all the titles stored in memory, either through playlists created by the user, sorted by artist, album or composer, to provided that such information is available on audio.
The ergonomics of the player is pleasant to the eye.

Sound quality is good, be it speaker or listen using the pedestrian kit (which is composed of a fairly comprehensive remote control and a 3.5mm jack that can connect directly most headsets on the market).
The Nokia 5800 includes a link to "Nokia Music", a service of the OVI Nokia platform, which allows to buy music online.
In the menu option, an "Update my music 'to start a search for all the music titles that are in memory. Unfortunately, only new files are added to the list of available titles. This means that if you delete an audio file from file manager, it remains in the list of available titles, and if we change the directory, it appears twice, in triplicate see. Not very point at all ...

Playback video files in MPEG4 format, regardless of memory size, is quite pleasant.
When selecting a video, the display automatically switches to landscape mode.
For each video posted, the image is "framed" on the length and width of the screen, which explains, for some videos viewed, the image appeared a little stretched. " But this is not too embarrassing.
For against, when you look at TV Channel Streaming video from the Orange World portal, the image retains the same definition display as that defined by the operator.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features an FM radio. Unlike Nokia "NSeries" the radio via the internet is not available. It'sa shame for a phone dedicated to music.
To select and record the frequency of the desired radio station, two solutions are possible:
- By manual selection of frequency,
- By an automatic search for stations, which displays as in the form of list, radios identified.
The reception is quite good, and the application seems to work properly. The little fun, the animation on the screen while listening to the radio: the number of the frequency scrolls from left to right and from right to left in various forms. Nice.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic comes with a cable TV output, which allows viewing on a TV screen pictures, videos, ... a real small portable media.

3 - Taking pictures and videos

With Carl Zeiss optics, x3 digital zoom, an autofocus, a dual LED flash and a 3.2 Mpixels camera, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is expected to produce beautiful photos and video.

Pictures taken with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is correct when the light is good and average in lower light conditions. Unfortunately, this one Nokia has not inherited the excellent camera of Nokia E90 and N73.
The photos taken can not be geo-tagguées, despite the presence of a GPS chip in the Nokia 5800. C'est dommage.
A number of options are available for taking pictures:
- Fashion Flash: on, off, automatic, anti red-eye
- Ways of White Balance Auto, sunny, cloudy, incandescent lighting, fluorescent lighting
- Center weighted auto exposure: normal, sepia, black and white, color, negative
- Direct Print compatible photo printer

Regarding the videos, the 5800 XpressMusic makes videos in MPEG4 format rather average quality.

4 - Function of GPS

With a GPS chip supported the A-GPS technology on the one hand, and Nokia Maps on the other hand, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a good GPS.
The detection of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic satellite takes between ten and twenty seconds, then Nokia Maps does the rest.
It is possible to visualize the routes to "2D", "3D" (view map in a more inclined) or hybrid (a mixture of 2D and satellite view).

Any position on the map may be in the form of bookmarks, each bookmark can be positioned within one or more categories (which are configurable).
Two navigation modes are available: pedestrian or car.
For those who only want a GPS for pedestrian and do not necessarily my voice navigation, they can download Google Maps directly from the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

5 - Managing files
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic does not have to read the soft office files (except files. Txt ").

6 - Synchronizing with a PC
The synchronization of contacts, calendar, notes, ... with Ms Outlook works perfectly.
Navigation in the memories and registers of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic from Windows Explorer works well, like copying and moving files.

7 - Java applications
The Java engine of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic allows the installation of many games and many applications.
The large screen allows a good visualization applications.
Two games come standard: Bounce and RT GR.

8 - Other functions of communication

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a good phone. The sound is good, whether through the earpiece or pedestrian kit supplied as standard.
The audio or video files can be set as a ringtone.
The sensitivity to the network is correct.
Autonomy is correct. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is more than two days in fairly frequent use of various multimedia features.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a good smartphone for playing audio and video files, management of email (without attachments), navigation (GPS and web), and telephone.
For other multimedia features, users of Nokia mobile NSeries therefore find the services offered by the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic insufficient.

This phone looks incredible and seems to have tons of options. I remember when a 1.3 megapixel camera was a big deal on a cell phone; this one has 3.2. I laugh when I look at this phone and think about the old Nokia brick phones...things change quick.

Found the Nokia 5800 a litle funny to use, the squidgy screen and decidedly Nokia-flavoured interface was a little more boring than the promise of a touchscreen handset. Great handset though, a Lexus rather than a Rolls Royce of mobile phones.
