Digital Cable VS Satellite TV

Posted by bewe 14 Mei 2008 1 comments

digital_tv Do you want to get more channels while saving money but not sure if you should go with digital cable or satellite TV? Then this article is meant directly for you! The commercials seen on TV and the ad’s displayed all over the internet can be overwhelming at best. Below we will hope to help make your choice simplified for you!

Cost Difference between Digital Cable VS Satellite TV:

Most cable companies include local franchise fees along with local broadcasting fees on your monthly bill. Digital cable varies starting at $30-$40 per month and up depending on the package you choose it can go up as high as $90 per month.

While Satellite packages usually offer betters deals based on how much money is spent per channel. Some satellite companies offer a price point between of $25 for over fifty channels. With most satellite companies pricing may be a little higher per month unless committing to twelve months of programming up front. A twelve month satellite commitment will usually ensure lower cost up front and most even free installation of the satellite dish.

Programming differences between Digital Cable VS Satellite TV:

Most Satellite TV systems can support over 250 channels of programming. All channels are of digital quality. One downside is satellite offers less local channels and may not have local channels in some areas. Most satellite companies also offer HD TV services that are compatible to your satellite TV service.

Digital cable on the other hand can support over 300 channels of programming of digital quality. Digital Cable has more local channels available in most major cities. Most cable companies now offer Video on Demand (a library of movies and TV shows that you can order at your leisure). HDTV services are becoming more popular amongst cable companies now and not just thru satellite TV as in the past.

Difference of Equipment:

Satellite equipment typically includes a satellite dish that is installed outside the home that is visible to everyone. A satellite receiver is also essential per TV. Most satellite receivers today also come with a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) which the cable company has not yet been able to offer as of now. Most satellite companies run specials on free installation and equipment when you agree to a 12 month contract.

Digital cable also requires one receiver per TV but that is all the equipment needed. Should you disconnect your service the receivers will be turned into the cable company where as with Satellite TV you own the dish.

In closing:

In the end the prices are comparable but it depends on which system will best suit your television needs and what you are more comfortable with. Both Digital TV and Satellite TV both have their disadvantages and advantages, you make the call!

satellite_tv_cartoon You've seen the online and offline ads -- "Free satellite TV!" "Get a 4-room Satellite TV System Free!" and "Satellite TV Dish and Receivers Absolutely Free!"
But is satellite TV really free? The answer to that question is yes ... and no.
Yes, the equipment you get -- the satellite TV dish and satellite TV receiver -- is free. But no, the programming service will cost you money.
Let's examine the facts.
Due to the demise of Pegasus and Voom, there are only two major satellite TV providers in the USA -- Dish Network and DirecTV.

Dish Network Satellite TV Service

When you order a free satellite TV system from Dish Network, you will be asked to pay a $49.99 activation fee. This fee will be credited to your programming bill, so in essence, your satellite TV system is free. Installation of your satellite TV system is also free.
With Dish Network you have the option to upgrade to a DVR (digital video recording) receiver, or an HDTV (high definition TV) receiver at no charge.
Dish Network programming starts at $31.99 per month for 60 program channels, and goes up to $86.00 for 230 channels including Showtime, Starz!, HBO, Cinemax, and Sirius radio.
Dish Network offers more movies, shows, and HDTV than cable or DirecTV, and with one of their free DVR receivers you can record, pause, and fast forward live TV with a click of your remote. All Dish Network programs are broadcast in digital format for crystal-clear picture and sound.

DirecTV Satellite TV Service

Depending on your credit rating, when you order a free satellite TV system from DirecTV you may be required to pay a deposit or prepayment. Because the deposit is refunded to you and the prepayment goes toward your programming fees, the DirecTV satellite dish and receivers are free. Installation is also free.
If you want a DVR receiver you will be charged an additional $49.99. The charge for HDTV receivers is $299.99.
DirecTV programming packages start at $41.99 per month for 115 channels (including 31 music channels), and go up to $93.99 per month for 185 program channels, including Showtime, Starz!, HBO, Cinemax, and 31 music channels.
DirecTV offers more sports programs than you can get with cable or Dish Network, including the popular NFL Sunday Ticket, and is broadcast in all-digital format.

The Bottom Line

Both Dish Network and DirecTV's basic satellite TV dishes and receivers are free ... but the service will cost you anywhere from $32 to $94 a month.
So if you watch just a few television programs a week and have access to over-the-air TV, or if you have cable TV and are happy with your service, then satellite TV probably isn't for you.
If, on the other hand, TV is one of your primary forms of entertainment and you want the biggest variety of shows, movies, sports, and new -- or if your cable bill is beginning to equal your mortgage payment -- then satellite TV may be just the ticket.

Wireless Broadband Basics

Posted by bewe 05 Mei 2008 2 comments

Wireless broadband is a general term used for the technology that is able to gain access to the internet wirelessly, and at high bandwidth speeds. Wireless broadband is available on virtually any digital device, so long as it has the proper connectivity hardware. Such hardware can easily be attached to most PDAs and laptop computers.

One of the most popular and well known wireless technology standards is Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity), which allows users to access the internet over a wireless Local Area Network. The speed and range of Wi-Fi, however, is severely limited. There is another wireless connectivity standard, called WiMAX, which is considerably more advanced.

WiMAX is a protocol by which signals are sent to wireless broadband users. A WiMAX base station can theoretically beam a signal as far as 50km (31 miles), meaning that a single station could potentially cover an entire city (unlike Wi-Fi, which is only available in "hotspots").

Although WiMAX are networks are available in several major metropolitan areas in the US, base stations are very expensive to build, and aren’t cost effective in less densely populated areas. Because of this limitation, WiMAX technology is not yet available in most non-urban regions.

Although WiMAX has been a major technological achievement, wireless broadband certainly doesn’t stop there. There are a number of other cutting edge wireless protocols currently in development. The most notable of these is a new protocol called xMax, which is similar to WiMAX, but a lot more efficient. It can cover a broader range at a lower cost, by piggybacking on radio frequencies. Although xMax is not yet available to the public, it will most likely be launched within the next couple of years.

As a parent, watching your child go off to college may be exciting and yet scary! Your new college student may also be happy to go off to school, but at the same time feel anxious to be leaving his family behind for the first time in his life.

One of the problems with living on campus is that students usually do not have a choice between long distance carriers. Most college dorms will not allow your child to pick a cheap long distance plan or any phone plan for that matter. But we do have some solutions for you that will allow you to get a cheap long distance so you can talk with your child as frequently as you like without fear of an expensive phone bill arriving at the end of the month!

Below you will find solutions for your long distance options that will save you money while also allowing you to talk to your child frequently without worry of a huge phone bill!

Phone Cards

Purchasing a calling card is a good choice for long distance and it offers a couple options as well. The two types of calling cards are – prepaid and postpaid. From parents point of view, prepaid is probably your best option. You can send your child a phone card with allotted time paid for in advance. That way you pay this fee only, should the card run out of minutes it won’t work again until you recharge it or buy another depending on the phone card you choose.

A postpaid card means you are billed on a monthly basis for all of the calls you made. As you can see, this may end up a problem at the end of the month when you get a larger bill then expected! To use a postpaid calling card you will be billed monthly through your debit card or credit card that you set up your account using.

Cellular Phone Plans

Cellular phones come in second to calling cards for convenience and allowing you to stay on budget! In this day and age there are many different phone companies and cheap long distance plans to choose from. With most cellular phone companies you can pick a service plan that has unlimited minutes and some even have a small extra fee should you go over your plan minutes that month.

Also, many cellular plans offer a “family talk plan” which means if you have the same service as your child your talk time is free within your plan and all other calls use your minutes. There are definitely many cellular plans available to you and most are affordable as well. You just need to take the time to research and find which one works for you. For more research and comparison visit Cheap Long Distance Carriers.

Toll Free Number

A personal toll free number is another option available to you. A toll free number is also known as an 800 or 888 phone number. If you are considering a toll free number be sure to ask if it is a stand alone service and if you are able to forward the 800 number to another phone line so you can answer it anywhere.

However, please note when choosing a toll free number again you are faced with the chance that you may receive a bill at the end of the month that is more expensive than expected. An 800 number usually has a minimum monthly fee and then you pay per minute of talk time but it will essentially depend on which company you go through for your toll free phone service.

And there you have it your top three choices for cheap long distance are calling cards - both postpaid and prepaid a cellular service plan or a toll free number. Be sure to do your research and find out which option is best for you and your family that will also allow you to stay within a budget with no surprises at the end of the month! Cheap long distance is just a reach away!
